Where I’m From
(Inspired by a poem by George Ella Lyons)I am from Dr Pepper
with a sweet taste of sugar.
Chocolates, Cookies,
and Ice Cream.I am from the aroma of candles
with the scents of Strawberries
and Baked Apple Pie.
I am from the bittersweet country
with twisting roads and a land of hills.I am from the barking and yelping
of Buddy in a thunderstorm,
Frightened by the claps of thunder
and flashes of lightening.I am from the fire that gleams in the winter
which warms the air of my grandparent’s house.
I am from the sounds of the crackling wood
where the logs blaze violently in the fireplace.I am from Clyde Barrow,
a life full of guilt and crime.
I am from the lunatic person
who made many lives miserable.
I am from this man
that puts my ancestors through humiliation.I am from a Father, not a Dad,
that disappeared from my life.
I am from a person that didn’t want a child,
who gave up his daughter
and refused to pay child support.I am from Lisa and Gary French
a pair of loving parents
that share their love with me.
I am from the perfect family
that love each other greatly.
Through thick and thin unchanging.
