Tobacco Road

Smoky-blue haze
     Floats over roads and streams
In valleys and hollows
    Sinking and moving
     With the Autumn wind

Gray weathered barns
    Heavy hung with leaves
Long as a man is tall
    Burley bright or emerald dark
    Fired with Hickory’s bark

The Tennessee/Kentucky hills
     Drenched in sun and haze
Wild ageratum and black eyed Susans
     Hug the wayside path
     Shrouded in the blue mist
     Of Tobacco Roads.
