Where I’m From
(adapted from George Ella Lyons)

I am from rolling green hills
From blue green pastures containing majestic horses
And the wide-open spaces that stretch for miles.

I am from leaf-blanketed forests with winding streams
From old maple trees with branches that sway in the afternoon breeze
I’m from silvery blue creeks with crawdads and tadpoles
From riverside rocks covered in moss and caves,
With underground rivers that go on and on.

I am from an ocean of goldenrod that smells of life itself
From those perfect rows of flowering tobacco and towering cornstalks
I am from Kentucky.
