Best Practices: LinkedIn

Best Practices for LinkedIn

LinkedIn is a great networking resource for professionals. In addition to being an online résumé site, LinkedIn offers a variety of groups for associations and interests, pages for companies, and special tools for universities. LinkedIn is being used in the classroom more frequently each year; it's a great tool to prepare students for job finding after graduation.

When creating a LinkedIn profile, here are some things to consider:

Profile Photo: Is it professional?

Since LinkedIn is a professional networking site, and accounts are strongly related to places of employment, it is important that your profile photo is professional. We recommend using a professional headshot (request one through University Photography if you are faculty/staff)...and the #1 rule? No selfies!

Summary: Is it succinct?

Your profile summary should be a brief overview of who you are as a professional: passions, achievements, interests, etc. Be sure to use relevant keywords so your profile appears in searches. Another tip? Fill out your profile using first-person voice.

Job Descriptions: Are they detailed?

Since your LinkedIn profile functions as an online résumé, don't be afraid to be precise with your job descriptions. Provide a wealth of detail, but we recommend using bullet points to keep a good flow. Incorporating links, presentations, or images of your work will help your profile stand out!

Endorsements: Which ones matter?

Your LinkedIn connections can endorse you for various skills (such as social media, public speaking, research, etc.). You can rearrange your endorsed skills on your profile however you see it: most-endorsed, most-relevant, alphabetical order... We recommend that the endorsements displayed on your profile are relevant to your current field of employment.

Connections: Do you know them?

While LinkedIn is a great resource for networking, it's important to not add a new connection for the sake of numbers. Connect with coworkers, relevant colleagues in your sector, and anyone who can vouch for you professionally.
