Jerome Ringo - Sustainability Conference
A man touted as an environmental pioneer says Western Kentucky University is making great strides in the area of sustainability.
In this week’s “View from the Hill”, Amy Bingham tells us about the spark ignited at the ’09 Sustainability Conference.
Jerome Ringo represents the largest alternative energy coalition in the country.
He was one of the featured speakers at the recent state-wide Sustainability Conference held on WKU’s campus.
“We need to move quickly to declare energy independence and stimulate economy and curb impact of global warming, what better place to start than somewhere like Western Kentucky?”
Apollo Alliance President Jerome Ringo is looking to reactivate activism on campuses like WKU.
“Places like WKU play a major role in preparing the next generation to be green job leaders in this country, whether it be manufacturing, etc…can make sure all jobs are filled from universities like this.”
After surveying the campus and the sustainability initiatives already underway, Ringo says Western is off to a great start.
“You’re already building a building that is LEED certified..silver for sure, possibly gold and that’s a win/win.”
Christin Lanham , WKU’S recycling coordinator who also oversees the garden crew says Ringo’s speech was inspiring.
“I was really impressed with how much of our situation he took in and incorporated into his talk, he was to the point…so glad to hear it.”
“I think everybody left there ready to lead a movement.”
Ringo has even been tapped to advise the Obama administration on investing public money into research and development of alternative energy.
Students say they are ready to help.
“It was a great speech, I’m glad someone with that kind of power has taken the lead in sustainability..he’ll lead the way, pave the way and WKU will be right behind him.”
More than 200 people attended the sustainability conference. It’s expected to be held on another college campus in Kentucky next year.
With this week’s View from the Hill, I’m Amy Bingham.
