Gateway: Living and Learning Community

Gateway is a themed living/learning option that welcomes students who have a particular interest in community organization, civic engagement, and social justice.   Designated rooms in the newly remodeled residence hall Pearce/Ford Tower will allow these students to live near each other and with a residence hall advisor who also shares an interest in civic responsibility.  Special programming, trips, study, and engagement opportunities will be available to these students.   Gateway is an interdisciplinary community that especially welcomes exploratory students. Students must have a minimum composite ACT score of 18 to enroll in Gateway. To apply Click Here.

Gateway will be housed in the newly remodeled residence hall –Pearce Ford Tower (PFT) – that will allow students to live near each other and with a residence hall advisor who also shares an interest in civic responsibility. Newly remodeled rooms will have moveable furniture and wireless internet.   Common area spaces are available throughout the building to study and socialize (with flat screen TV’s, furniture, and study tables), classroom spaces are available for faculty to hold class and study sessions, and there is a recreation lounge for students on the 27th floor.  A satellite TLC (The Learning Center) is also located on the 27th floor – devoted to PFT residents! Additionally, a restaurant, convenience store, and bus stop for class and shopping are nearby.

The First Semester in Gateway students must enroll in University Experience and Enduring Questions: The Committed Life.  Introduction to College Writing is also available to Gateway students as a communal experience.

The Second Semester in Gateway will give students choices from several classes offered through the Institute for Citizenship and Social Responsibility.  These are 1-3 credit hour classes offered in a bi-term or full semester.  Again, students will share classes with their friends in the Gateway community so that learning and programming options can carry into residence life.

The Third Semester in Gateway students will enroll in UE 276 is a class in community organizing and development where students will learn skills directed towards community building and complex problem solving through applied learning.  Students at this level in Gateway (the first semester of their sophomore years) will also be asked to engage with the first-semester Gateway students through mentoring, class legacy, and other leadership opportunities.
