In March, Assistant Professor Michelle Dvoskin and the members of the Honors section of World Theatre History II had the opportunity to attend the College Days weekend at the Humana Festival of New American Plays at the Actors Theatre of Louisville. Thanks to generous support from the Honors College, as well as the Dept. of Theatre & Dance, the students were able to experience the work of a major American regional theatre first-hand.
Keifer Adkins (double major, BFA Performance and History) was particularly engaged by Idris Goodwin’s hip-hop coming of age play How We Got On, but found the whole festival deeply rewarding: “We saw five remarkable new plays, sat in on panel discussions and talkbacks with the playwrights and actors, and made some potential connections as well.”
Kaitlyn Fouts (BFA Performance) found the wide range of events made for a particularly rich and thought provoking experience, commenting that “Finding respect and admiration for new things was a theme I found myself taking away from the Humana Festival—I left wanting to be an Acting Apprentice, an Education Intern, a playwright, a spoken word poet, and a beat boxer.” All of the students involved commented on how much they enjoyed the Humana Festival, and hope to return next year on their own!
