Faculty lament that students are focused on achieving high grades as opposed to learning. Most students think that memorizing information just before an examination is tantamount to learning the material. Today's students spend considerably less time studying than is commensurate with their grade expectations. The reasons for this are somewhat surprising.

This workshop will help faculty understand why today's students do not have effective learning strategies, and will present methods by which faculty can teach students how to learn, within the context of academic disciplines. Participants will engage in interactive activities, mini-lectures, and group discussions to learn how study strategies such as concept mapping, note taking systems, and critical thinking exercises can significantly improve student interest in learning, with a resultant increase in both learning and performance.
