System Definitions and Scheduled Downtimes
The table below lists system descriptions and scheduled downtimes.  These are periods of time when a system is expected to be unavailable to users, such as during a system backup, upgrade, regular reboot, or other period of regular maintenance.


AD File/Print

Definition:
WKU uses Active Directory, a network operating system that provides file and printer sharing among the various workstations on campus.

Definition:

ASA Reports

Definition:
The ASA Reports system (formerly Topsmart) is a business intelligence/reporting system that is accessed through a web client (at reports.wku.edu). ASA Reports contains reports primarily oriented towards departments and advisors, but the system also processes finance reports linked from Banner and other reports linked from Topnet.

Banner Finance Reports

Definition:
Banner Finance Reports are special Crystal reports accessible through the Banner Forms interface.

Banner Forms

Definition:
The Banner forms consist of a client application that accesses the Banner database and runs from either a Novell network drive or is delivered through the web. Banner is the university's ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) system.

Blackboard (Ecourses, Online Courses)

Definition:
Online course materials used for distance education courses and web-enhanced courses.

BSR/Advance

Definition:
BSR is an Alumni/Development database system used to track Alumni donations and university fund raising campaigns.

Approximately 11:45 PM to 12:00 AM daily.

CATV

Definition:
Campus cable television system

Departmental Computer Labs

Definition:
General purpose computer labs for student users, with locations at TCCW 204, Cherry Hall 127, EST 345, Helm Library 2nd floor, Grise 239/243/335, MMTH 145, and extended campus labs... South Campus 140, Glasgow 163/165/231, Owensboro and Fort Knox.

E-Mail

Definition:
E-mail stands for electronic mail and is a means of sending messages from one person to another using the Internet as your carrier, much like using the postal service. The WKU E-mail system includes not only the servers that process and distribute messages, but also webmail servers that allow users to access their mailboxes from a web site.

IVS Classrooms (ITV)

Definition:

LDAP

Definition:
Lightweight Directory Access Protocol. A typical LDAP server is a simple network-accessible database where an organization stores information about its authorized users and what privileges each user has. WKU uses LDAP for Blackboard logins, E-mail logins, open lab logins, and more.

Library Systems

Definition:
Library systems include the library catalog system and the eResources which include off-campus eJournals, eBooks, and more.

Network Infrastructure

Definition:
All operations and systems that that comprise the University data network. This includes all routing and switching equipment and connectivity as well as services such as DNS and DHCP.

Scheduled Downtimes*:
**Scheduled major outage** Starting at 11pm Monday (7/13) and, barring and unforseen complications, ending by 2am Tuesday(7/14) - A BGMU fiber relocation project being performed due to the new College of Education building will result in an outage for all WKU Internet1 & Internet2 connectivity and connectivity to the ETOWN and OBO remote campuses.

Novell File/Print

Definition:
WKU uses Novell NetWare, a network operating system that provides file and printer sharing among the various workstations on campus.

Radio & TV Transmission

Definition:
WKU's Public Broadcasting includes transmission of television station WKYU-PBS,and Western's Public Radio which includes stations WKYU 88.9 in Bowling Green, WKPB 89.5 in Henderson/Owensboro, WDCL 89.7 in Somerset, and WKUE 90.9 in Elizabethtown.

Student Technology Centers (Open Labs)

Definition:

Definition:
The telephone system consists of various physical lines and switches that route calls between telephones on campus or between campus phones and off-campus phones.

Topnet

Definition:
Topnet is a web-based interface to information contained in the Banner system. It is accessed by students and faculty for grades, registration, student records, financial aid, billing, course schedules, and related info. Employees of the university access Topnet for benefits information, pay information, tax information, and other similar info.

Voice Mail

Definition:
Voice Mail is a voice messaging and answering system for campus telephones.

Definition:
The WKU World Wide Web server stores a collection of online documents. This not only includes Western's main web site at www.wku.edu, but also various faculty and staff web sites.
