Student FAQ
- Do I have to speak a foreign language to study abroad? No. There is a range of different options available from programs taught entirely in English to programs taught entirely in a foreign language, and everything in between.

- How much does it cost to study abroad?
It depends..each program has different costs that must be considered. In many instances, studying abroad is much more cost effective that being a tourist, and you receive academic credit as well.

- Will my financial aid apply?
Probably. Student Financial Assistance is the ultimate arbiter and should be consulted for a definitive answer.

- Who can study abroad?
Each program or course may have different requirements for participation. Eligibility can depend on college credit earned, major, courses taken, or other factors. You should consult the individual program or program director for eligibility.

- Can I learn a language while I am abroad?
Yes! Many programs are specifically designed to either directly or indirectly help you improve your language skills. Both short and long term opportunities exist for language instruction.

- Do I need a passport?
Yes. In many countries a passport is all that is required. However, in some countries a visa is also required. Please check with your chosen program regarding visa requirements.

- How does the credit work?
Credit that is not awarded at WKU will be transferred back to the university. A "study abroad approval form" has been developed to help students communicate with the academic departments and figure out transfer equivalencies prior to departure.

- Can I study abroad if I am a freshman? A senior? In most cases, yes. Every program is different, but there is no best time to study abroad. Previous WKU students have been able to study abroad the summer before their freshman year as well as after graduation.
You can never start too early and its never too late to go.

- What courses/programs are being offered? Please check our updated programs page for current program information.

- Will I get sick? Students vary, but anyone can stay healthy by staying smart and being prepared. It is a good idea to consult with a physician well before the departure date about what, if any, inoculations and medicines are needed. While on the program, it is advisable to do the common sense things: get plenty of sleep, eat a well-balanced diet, drink plenty of water, etc.

- What about insurance?
Starting August 15, 2009, health insurance is mandatory for students traveling on WKU Study Abroad or Travel Abroad programs

Emergency travel insurance should be considered and compared to make sure you know what you're getting and it serves your purposes for the costs.

- How long do the programs last? We have all kinds of programs – from a couple weeks to a year. Each opportunity is constructed differently and should be reviewed individually.

- When do I need to decide? Generally speaking, you need to plan four or five months in advance. Some exceptions exist.

- Where will I live? Again, it varies. It could be a dorm, a hostel, a hotel, or a family’s extra bedroom. Each location has unique arrangement and the program directors and/or the Study Abroad Office can tell you about the specific program you choose.

- Will it delay my graduation? Probably not. Programs are designed to provide academic credit in either the major/minor, general education, or electives. A student should consult with their academic advisor during the investigation process.

- Will there be with other WKU students? Many programs include other WKU students, but may consist of students from other universities or other countries. This is a wonderful opportunity to meet people from all over the region, country and world.
