Study Abroad Programs

There are several types of study abroad programs available to WKU students. Please read the brief descriptions below for more information. More details can be found through the links to the left.

Faculty-led programs listed on this site are proposed by WKU faculty members and approved by WKU's International Education Council. The course offerings and locations may change every year. Students should contact the leading faculty member directly for an application if one is not posted with the program description on this website. The cost for each program will depend on where the program is going, how long the program is, and several other factors. After a student is accepted into the program, he/she will register (or be registered) for the course via TopNet.

Consortia study abroad programs are conducted through either Kentucky Institute for International Studies (KIIS) , Cooperative Center for Study Abroad (CCSA) or our newest partner College Consortium for International Studies (CCIS). KIIS and CCSA are regional organizations which have many member universities whose faculty propose and teach the courses and whose students participate in the courses. Generally, consortia programs will be conducted in the same locations every year, but the courses offered will change as faculty members decide what to propose.  CCIS is a national consortium with a variety of year-long, semester-long and short-term programs in 31 countries around the world..

Exchange partners are universities with which WKU has written agreements for the exchange of students and/or faculty. Each agreement may be slightly different, but in most cases, students are charged in-state tuition by WKU, not by the foreign university. Room and board charges and other fees may be paid differently depending on the agreement.

Affiliated programs are a bit broader than those programs listed above. These may be programs in which WKU faculty are involved but WKU is not the credit-granting institution. It may also be a study abroad provider with which the WKU Study Abroad Office has an affiliation agreement. Please follow the link to the left for more information about each affiliated program.

If the student does not find a program from the above categories which is a good fit, he/she may also utilize the services of a third party study abroad provider. Third party providers are universities or study abroad companies with which WKU has no agreement or connection with regards to study abroad. A WKU student may still participate in these programs and should definitely consult with the Study Abroad Office about the steps that need to be taken in order to ensure that useful credit is received.
