Communication

At a bullfight in Spain.

There are several communication options available to students and their families. It is important for students and families to discuss reasonable methods and timetables for communication. It is probably not practical (or cost effective) to ask students to make contact every day. In many cases, schedules, access to phones and computers, time differences, or cost of communication may prohibit communications from occurring at the frequency and duration expected by the student or his/her family. Set realistic expectations as to what is possible and healthy. Here are some tips to help facilitate communication while the student is abroad:

  • Check with cell phone providers about the use of the phone and rates in the country of destination.  While using a cell phone overseas can be very expensive, data plans, e mail or text messaging, may be manageable and reasonable relative to cost.  This is also a great way to communicate if schedules are tight and/or time differences are great.
  • Invest in calling cards for both families and students.  Many different international calling cards exist which greatly reduce the cost to the sending party.  This will require the use/access to land lines, which are not always accessible or practical.  However, for the occasional call, this is a good option.
  • Get a copy of flight schedules and trip itineraries from the student.
