Scholarships for African American Students

The National Association for Equal Opportunity in Higher Education (NAFEO) and the American Institute for Foreign Study (AIFS) have announced that $100,000 in study abroad scholarships will be available for African American students by fall 2010.

NAFEO, an umbrella organization of historically and predominantly black institutions, and AIFS, one of the nation's leading cultural exchange programs, have partnered to provide these scholarships so that an increased number of African American students can have opportunities to gain global perspective. Although some historically and predominately black institutions have strong study abroad programs, a study conducted by the Institute of International Education found that just over three percent of African American students spend time studying abroad.

Students who receive scholarships from the NAFEO-AIFS partnership will have opportunities to study in England, France, Italy, Spain, the Czech Republic, and South Africa. GRC will provide updates about this program as more information becomes available.
