Surge Protectors

Since Ogden College has a very large number of electronic devices it is very important that we make sure each device is protected with a high quality surge protector power strip.  Many regular power strips are easily mistaken for being surge protectors.  There are many cheap surge protectors that may or may not be adequate.  One way to know if a surge protector power strip is of good quality is to buy it from a reputable manufacturer.  Examples of companies that make tried and proved surge protectors are Tripplite and APC.  These and others offer a clear guarantee that their product will protect to the point of paying for damage to your electronics.  This amounts to some relatively inexpensive insurance for your devices.  Read the box before purchasing.

Just about everyone that owns a computer has taken steps to protect it with a surge protector power strip.  However a large number of them overlook the importance of making sure all the lines going into the computer go through a surge protector.  This includes phone lines.  Quality surge protector power strips can be purchased that will  accommodate telephone lines and coaxial cables.

Also many people overlook other electronics that they might have such as telephones, fax machines, televisions, VCR's, satellite receivers, DVD & CD players, stereos, microwave ovens, & projectors.  Additionally some devices, such as rechargeable ones, are only plugged up occasionally making it easy to forget to plug it into a surge protector.  In Ogden College there is a wide assortment of these type devices as well as scientific instruments too numerous to list.

It is a very good idea to inventory all the electronic devices in each department and make sure they adequately protected.  Considering the high cost of some of these devices it is money well spent.
