Getting Started

Once you have decided what path to take we can help you get there. If you would like to schedule an appointment with on of our advisors we can walk you through the following five steps. It is necessary to do these steps in this basic order.

Step 1 - WKU Academic programs

Western Kentucky University offers more than 170 choices for undergraduate areas of study through majors, minors, associate degree programs, certificate programs, pre-professional study, and areas of concentration within majors. Use the following links to explore academic programs.

Step 2 - Admission to WKU

The second step in attending WKU is to apply. There are several admission requirments depending on your status (beginning student, transfer, readmission student, or visiting students). In addition, there are specific deadlines for applicatons by semester and a $40 fee.

Please review all of the requirements by going to the admission homepage. When you are ready to apply, you can apply online.

 Step 3 - Financial Aid

If you would like to seek financial aid (loans, grants, scholarships, veterans' benefits, tuition waivers and/or work-study) you will need to apply for financial aid. To do so, you start by filling out the FASFA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid).

During your appointment with an Adult Learner Counselor we can help you fill out your initial FASFA. To be more prepared, you can use this FASFA worksheet to gather the information you will need to fill out the online application.

Step 4 - TopNet

TopNet is WKU's student information portal that allows students to view pertinant information (view your email address, bill, see who your advisor is, etc.) and preform stuent functions (register for classes, print your semester schedule, change your major, etc.).

Once you have been admitted to WKU you will receive a student ID number, commonly referred to as your "800 number." This is your TopNet logon and your initial password is the last six digits of your social security number. Upon you first login, you will be prompted to change your password.

Step 5 - E-mail

Once you have registered for classes, you will recieve a WKU e-mail address. You can then obtain your e-mail address and set your password by clicking here.

Once you have your WKU E-mail address and password, you can
log-in from the WKU Homepage, click Current Students and then Webmail (E-mail).
