Officer Assistant Shift Commander

DESCRIPTION OF WORK

A person in this position as a sworn police officer, performs general police duties in the protection of life and property through the enforcement of laws and ordinances. Work involves supervision of sworn police personnel and communications officers engaged in executing the various functions performed by the Patrol Unit. Decisions are generally limited by established procedure; however, operating decisions are made based on precedent organizational policies. Employees in this position receive instructions and guidance from a Patrol Sergeant. Employees are expected to exercise independent judgement in the absence of a superior. This work involves an element of personal danger and substantial public contact with citizens and law violators. This work involves protecting life and property, prevention of adult and juvenile crime, apprehension of law violators, directing of traffic, and general enforcement of laws and ordinances. This position requires full and continuous training as a law enforcement officer. In the absence of the Patrol Sergeant, a person in this position assumes the duties of the Patrol Sergeant and reports directly to the Patrol Commander. A person in this position may be assigned to work any shift, including weekends and holidays and overtime assignments.



EXAMPLES OF WORK

  • In the absence of the Shift Commander, supervises and participates in general patrol duties, responds to major police, fire and accident calls.
  • In the absence of the Shift Commander, supervises and evaluates subordinates through training, observation and discipline.
  • In the absence of the Shift Commander, participates in the patrol shifts daily operation, responding to citizen’s calls for service and departmentally generated activities.
  • Reviews and corrects reports and paperwork submitted by subordinate officers.
  • Prepares written reports.
  • Trains and instructs officers.
  • Performs all duties of a Police Officer.
  • Conducts investigations into alleged violations of law.
  • Executes warrants of arrest.
  • Assists in the direction of vehicular and pedestrian traffic.
  • Investigates vehicle accidents.
  • Exercises crowd control techniques during special events.
  • Submits incident/offense reports to superiors.
  • Provides escort service as needed.
  • Conducts vehicle stops when appropriate and issues citations for moving violations.
  • Makes arrests when appropriate for violations of law.
  • Performs other police duties as assigned by the Major of Field Operations or the Chief of Police.


    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    Education: High school diploma or equivalent. “Progressive effort” toward obtaining an A.A., B.A., or B.S. degree preferred.

    Training: Successful completion of basic police training (754 classroom hours), and successful completion of an approved police supervisor’s course.

    Skills: Must have supervisory ability in addition to the basic skills of a police officer. Thorough knowledge of the rules and regulations of the police department. Thorough knowledge of modern police methods and procedures. Thorough knowledge of the geography of the university. Knowledge of the principles and techniques of modern police supervision. Knowledge of first aid techniques and skill in their application. Skill in the use and care of firearms and in the skilled operation of motor vehicles. Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions, prepare clear and comprehensive written reports. Assign, instruct, and review the work of subordinates. Ability to deal firmly, yet tactfully, with subordinates, faculty, staff, students, and citizens. Ability to analyze situations and to adopt quick, effective, reasonable courses of action. Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with the public, employees and the media. Must have knowledge of basic computer skills.

    Experience: Eligible after successful completion of initial probationary period. (Initial probationary period begins after successful completion of PTO training.) Must demonstrate the ability and potential for assuming additional supervisory responsibilities.

    Physical: Excellent physical condition. Must be capable of strenuous physical effort during arrest operations. Must have the ability to maintain satisfactory fitness level as delineated in the Law Enforcement Officer Essential Job Functions form. Must pass semi-annual firearms training.
