An annually-published nationwide literary magazine that publishes undergraduate works of poetry, creative nonfiction, fiction, and art. All work must be submitted by mail. Prizes offered: a $250 cash prize, plus publication. Cost: $5.
American Short Fiction

An online magazine that focuses on short fiction. They usually hold contests that reward money. For further guidelines, visit the site and click on the 'submit' tab up top. The last contest's first-place prize was $1,000.
Brevity

A fairly competitive, creative-nonfiction, online publication for published and unpublished writers. Word count is 750 words or less. Cost: FREE. No membership required.
Fanstory

An online publication site where writers submit and review each other's works. They accept short stories, essays, poetry, chapters from books, scripts, fiction, and nonfiction. You have to have a membership, but it's free to sign up. You get more options if you upgrade to an advanced member package. You have the option to enter free writing contests that have cash prizes. Lethbridge Undergraduate Research Journal

The Oswald Review

Thoreau's Rooster: A Journal of Undergraduate Creative Nonfiction

From the site: 'Thoreau's Rooster is a national web review for undergraduate writers of creative nonfiction. The review is edited by students at Assumption College in Worcester, MA, about 40 miles from Thoreau's old haunts at Walden's Pond.' Submission formats are accepted through e-mail and snail mail. Prize: $200 and publication. Cost: FREE.
Young Scholars in Writing
