Places to Submit Your Writing

 

A list of places for graduates and undergraduates to submit many different types of writings.  Many of these publications offer cash prizes.


The Allegheny Review

http://webpub.allegheny.edu/group/review/

An annually-published nationwide literary magazine that publishes undergraduate works of poetry, creative nonfiction, fiction, and art. All work must be submitted by mail.  Prizes offered: a $250 cash prize, plus publication. Cost: $5. 

American Short Fiction
http://www.americanshortfiction.org/

An online magazine that focuses on short fiction.  They usually hold contests that reward money.  For further guidelines, visit the site and click on the 'submit' tab up top. The last contest's first-place prize was $1,000. 

Brevity
http://www.creativenonfiction.org/brevity/

A fairly competitive, creative-nonfiction, online publication for published and unpublished writers.  Word count is 750 words or less.  Cost: FREE.  No membership required.

Fanstory

An online publication site where writers submit and review each other's works.  They accept short stories, essays, poetry, chapters from books, scripts, fiction, and nonfiction.  You have to have a membership, but it's free to sign up.  You get more options if you upgrade to an advanced member package.  You have the option to enter free writing contests that have cash prizes.  Visit the URL for more info.

Flask and Pen

An online literary magazine that accepts short stories, essays, poetry, and social comments.  Only accepts online submissions.  Check the site for further guidelines. Membership is required, but it's free. 

Lethbridge Undergraduate Research Journal

An international online journal that publishes undergraduate academic papers.  Its purpose is to support the literature written by undergrads and to promote discussion between peers. Cost:  FREE. 

NeoAmericanist

A self proclaimed 'inter-disciplinary online journal for the study of America.'  They accept articles, reviews, poetry, creative writing, and photography.  Cost:  FREE.

The Oswald Review

An annually-published International journal within English Studies that publishes the work of undergraduates.  They describe themselves as publishing 'research and criticism in the discipline of English.'  This site accepts submissions by mail only. Cost: FREE. 

Rise Over Run

WKU's online magazine.  They accept short stories and poetry (mainly poetry).  There is a word limit for short stories. No membership required. Cost: FREE. 

Short Stories at East of the Web

A very competitive online publication for published and unpublished writers.  They offer many different genres in which you can submit.  No word limit, but they don't accept novels or novellas'short stories only. Cost:  FREE. 

Storymania

An online magazine-esque publication.  Stories must be 500 words or more.  They accept every kind of writing.  No membership required.  They don't accept submissions through email though.  Cost:  FREE.

Thoreau's Rooster: A Journal of Undergraduate Creative Nonfiction

From the site:  'Thoreau's Rooster is a national web review for undergraduate writers of creative nonfiction. The review is edited by students at Assumption College in Worcester, MA, about 40 miles from Thoreau's old haunts at Walden's Pond.'  Submission formats are accepted through e-mail and snail mail.  Prize:  $200 and publication. Cost:  FREE. 

Young Scholars in Writing

From Penn State Berks submissions guidelines:  'Young Scholars in Writing: Undergraduate Research in Writing and Rhetoric seeks theory-driven and/or research-based submissions from undergraduates on the following topics: writing, rhetoric, composition, professional writing, technical writing, business writing, discourse analysis, writing technologies, peer tutoring in writing, writing process, writing in the disciplines, and related topics.'  Page Length:  Less than 25 pages.  E-mail submissions welcome.  View the URL for further guidelines.
