Verified Credit

All first time students should take the on-line placement examination in French, German, or Spanish if they have studied the language previously and intend to continue that study at Western. The examination may be accessed at the Placement section. Students who place into a course above the first semester (101) level and successfully complete that course with a "C" or better may then gain three to six additional hours of credit upon payment of a fee.

(a) If they are placed by examination into the second semester of the first- year language sequence (CHIN 102, FREN 102, GERM 102, ITAL 102, JAPN 102, RUSS 102, SPAN 102) and pass that course with a 'C' or better, they will be given the opportunity to earn an additional 3 hours for the first semester of the elementary language course (CHIN 101, FREN 101, GERM 101, ITAL 101, JAPN 101, RUSS 101, SPAN 101) upon payment of a fee. This verified credit will count toward the General Education foreign language requirement.

(b) If they are placed by examination into the first semester of the second year language sequence (FREN 201, GERM 201, SPAN 201) or any course higher in those language sequences and pass that course with a 'C' or better, they earn 3 credit hours for the course they have passed and will be given the opportunity to earn an additional 6 hours for the two semesters of the elementary language course (FREN 101 AND 102, GERM 101 AND 102, SPAN 101 and 102) upon payment of a fee. Successful completion of 201 or 202 fulfills the General Education foreign language requirement.
