In addition to the University's General Education Requirements, students may choose from the following courses of study:

The English major offers three concentrations. All include courses in the English language and surveys in British, American, and world literature. Other requirements vary:

Literature Concentration (reference number 662)--requires advanced composition and four upper level courses in specialized literary subjects.

Creative Writing Concentration (reference number 662)--requires five specialized writing courses (e.g., fiction, poetry, drama, memoir and autobiography, creative non-fiction), including an advanced writing workshop.

Professional Writing Concentration (reference number 662)--requires five specialized writing courses (e.g., Editing and Publishing, Technical Writing, Business Writing, Writing and Technology, Advanced Composition, History of Rhetoric), including an advanced writing workshop.

      English and Allied Language Arts Major(reference number 547)
      --designed for future public school teachers; includes courses in English
      language, surveys in British, American and world literature, two electives
      in a specialized literary subject, one advanced writing elective, and a
      variety of language arts classes (e.g., speech, Journalism, drama).

 

We also offer minors in Writing and in English:

 

Creative Writing Minor (reference number 496) a 21 hour minor designed to allow students  to hone their writing talents in fiction, poetry, creative non-fiction, and memoir, culminating in a capstone class (Advanced CW Workshop)

Professional Writing Minor (reference number 496)a 21 hour minor designed to allow students to develop writing skills to augment professional majors (e.g., Business, CIS, Advertising) or to enter writing-based professions (e.g., Publishing and Editing, Tech Writing); the minor culminates in a capstone class (Advanced PW Workshop), in which students will prepare a professional portfolio for prospective employers.

English Minor (Literature) (reference number 359) includes course in English Language, surveys of British and American Literature, one intensive course in a specialized literary subject, and one advanced writing elective.
