SPAN 100 SPANISH LANGUAGE AND CULTURE
ON-SITE 1-3 HOURS
Prerequisite: Permission of instructor. An introduction to Spanish and Spanish-speaking culture in conjunction with study abroad for students with little or no previous language study. Does not fulfill the general education foreign language requirement.
SPAN 101 ELEMENTARY SPANISH I

A beginning course designed to develop skills in understanding, speaking, reading and writing and to provide cultural insights.
SPAN 102 ELEMENTARY SPANISH II

Prerequisite: SPAN 101 or one year of high school Spanish. Continuation of development of four skills and of cultural insights.
SPAN 200 INTRODUCTION TO LATIN AMERICA
3 HOURS GEN ED E
This course is a broad, interdisciplinary introduction to the study of Latin America , emphasizing its regions, peoples and cultures. Since this course is taught by various departments, see Latin American studies advisor for enrollment. Not for major or minor credit.

Prerequisite: SPAN 102 or two years of high school Spanish. A systematic review of grammar and development of reading skills.
SPAN 202 INTERMEDIATE SPANISH II

Prerequisite: SPAN 201. Further review of grammar and development of reading skills.
SPAN 306 EXPERIENCING SPANISH ABROAD
1-6 HOURS
Prerequisite: SPAN 202 or equivalent and permission of instructor. Corequisite: Enrollment in supervised language study while abroad. Supervised language and cultural studies accomplished during a study abroad program. Students who receive transferable credit for language study done during the study abroad program will receive credit only for cultural study. May be repeated once for a maximum of six hours of credit.
SPAN 331 BUSINESS SPANISH 3 HOURS
Prerequisites: SPAN 202 or equivalent. Introduction to business communication in the Spanish-speaking countries: Linguistic structures and vocabulary, forms of business communication, reading and discussion of business texts, social customs.
SPAN 370 SPANISH CONVERSATION 3 HOURS
Prerequisite: SPAN 202. Exercises in pronunciation, comprehension and oral expression.
SPAN 371 SPANISH COMPOSITION AND GRAMMAR 3 HOURS Prerequisite: SPAN 202. Controlled written compositions and oral expression. Systematic and intensive review of grammar.
SPAN 372 LATIN AMERICAN CIVILIZATION AND CULTURE
3 HOURS GEN ED B-II
Prerequisite: SPAN 370 or 371 or equivalent. Survey of the historical and cultural background of Latin America and its people from the Discovery to the present.
SPAN 373 SPANISH CIVILIZATION AND CULTURE.

Prerequisite: SPAN 370 or 371 or equivalent. Survey of historical and cultural background of Spain and its people from the Roman colonization to the present.
SPAN 374 LITERATURE AND CULTURE OF SPAIN

Prerequisite: SPAN 370 or 371 or equivalent. An introduction to the culture of Spain through the study of literary texts. The course will discuss the historical contexts and cultural milieu that produced selected texts. The analysis of literary texts will be introduced.
SPAN 375 LATIN AMERICAN WOMEN 3 HOURS
Analysis of women's roles within the society in the Caribbean and Latin America . Understanding of the double standards imposed on men and women. The impact of socialization and the development of a critical consciousness.
SPAN 376 LITERATURE AND CULTURE OF LATIN AMERICA

Prerequisite: SPAN 370 or 371 or equivalent. An introduction to the culture of Latin America through the study of their literary and cultural production. The course will discuss the historical contexts and cultural milieu that produced selected texts. The analyses of literary texts will be introduced.
SPAN 389 INTERNSHIP IN SPANISH 1-3 HOURS
Prerequisites: One 300-level Spanish course or the equivalent, and permission of instructor. Supervised work using Spanish in a professional setting. Open only to Spanish majors or minors.
SPAN 470 ADVANCED ORAL SPANISH 3 HOURS
Prerequisite: SPAN 370 or equivalent. Conversation units, dramatic sketches, original oral topics.
SPAN 471 ADVANCED SPANISH COMPOSITION
3 HOURS Prerequisite: SPAN 371 or equivalent. Examination of selected literary works; original compositions on selected topics.
SPAN 476 TWENTIETH CENTURY SPAIN 3 HOURS Prerequisite: SPAN 373 or 374 or equivalent. A chronological study of the culture of Spain through the study of representative works. The course will discuss the historical contexts and cultural milieu that produced selected texts. The analyses of literary texts will be introduced.
SPAN 478 TWENTIETH CENTURY LATIN AMERICA 3 HOURS Prerequisite: SPAN 372 or 376 or equivalent. A chronological presentation of the culture of Latin America through examples of literature and cultural production of the twentieth century. The course will discuss the ideas and characteristics of cultural and literary movements in Latin America. Approaches to literary texts discussed in depth.
SPAN 490 HISPANIC CINEMA 3 HOURS
Prerequisite: SPAN 370 or SPAN 371 plus one other 300-level class. Introduction to the cinematic work of Latin American, Spanish, and US-Hispanic-Latino film artists and development of critical interpretative skills that enhance appreciation of films.
SPAN 499 ADVANCED STUDIES IN SPANISH 1-4 HOURS Prerequisites: Junior or senior standing and permission of instructor. For guided independent study in culture, language, or literature. May be used with consent of full-time program faculty members for work accomplished during study abroad. Number of credit hours will be determined in consultation with instructor. May be repeated for a maximum of six hours of credit.
