Professional Activities
    SPECIAL PROJECTS

  • 1994 - The Latin American Photojournalism Conference -- Co-chair of this program in Mexico City. We had 53 participants from 13 countries in Central and South America.
  • 1991 - Organized and directed the Rites of Spring documentary photojournalism project. Sponsored by Eastman Kodak Co. and Nikon Inc, over 1200 rolls of Kodachrome were exposed by fifteen of the top photojournalists in the country to document the coming-of-age ritual of spring break in Daytona, Florida. A professionally produced twelve-projector audio-visual show was the result.
  • Faculty member -Conference on Visual Management, The Poynter Institute.
  • 1991 As president of the NPPA initiated a successful minority recruitment program. The project involved a nationwide series of hands on mini-workshops aimed at minority students at the junior high and high school level. The workshops were directed and staffed by working professionals who volunteered their time.
  • 1990 - Electronic Projects Coordinator, NPPA - overseeing efforts in the area including the Digital Convention.
  • 1989 - Charter faculty member of NPPA's Electronic Photojournalism Workshop.
  • Director, The Mountain Workshops for 29 years. The Mountain Workshops are documentary style shooting and picture editing programs held each year in small towns in South-Central Kentucky or Northern Tennessee. Participants shoot picture stories on the people of the selected county and receive intensive critique from instructors drawn from the finest practitioners in the U.S.. Many consider the workshops the "Boot Camp" of documentary photojournalism. The picture editing participants produce a book exhibiting the work of the shooting participants.

    EDITORSHIP AND PUBLICATIONS
  • 1995 - Present Publisher of 100 page books resulting from the work of the Mountain Workshops faculty and participants.
  • 1986 - 1992 Wrote a number of stories for News Photographer Magazine concerning electronic imaging technologies in newspapers.
  • 1986 - Edited and published a photo book as a result of the Mountain People's Workshop, titled Edmonton.
  • 1985 - Edited and published a photo book as a result of the Mountain People's Workshop, titled Celina.
  • 1984 - Co-authored a book titled Bowling Green: A Pictorial History, published by Donning Publishers, 200 pgs.
  • 1984 Edited and published two photo books as a result of the Mountain Workshop, titled Tompkinsville and Burkesville.
  • 1977-82 National Press Photographer's Association: Editor of The Viewfinder, a quarterly newsletter for Region 4 members of the National Press Photographer's Association.
  • 1976 Western Kentucky University: Co-author and illustrator with Dr. Lynwood Montell of a book, Kentucky Folk Architecture. Published by the University Press of Kentucky. Now used as a text for folk architecture in folklore classes.
  • 1975 Western Kentucky University: Illustrated a book by Lynwood Montell called Ghosts Along the Cumberland. The book concerns ghosts and death-lore in the Cumberland River Valley and was published by the University of Tennessee Press.
  • 1974 - Western Kentucky University: Produced and photographed an audiovisual program, Folklore in the Works of Jesse Stuart.
  • 1971-present Thousands of photographs have appeared in publications such as The Daily News, Bowling Green, Ky., The Courier-Journal, Louisville Today, Hospital Magazine, and others.
