I am an ethnographer whose work bridges the fields of folklore, cultural anthropology, and popular culture. I graduated from The Ohio State University with a Ph.D. in cultural anthropology and folklore, specializing in Slavic and Southeast Asian cultures. I received my M.A. in popular culture from Bowling Green State University, one of the few national popular culture programs in North America. My research interests are many and include popular culture, youth culture, holidays, festivals and public displays, folk beliefs, foodways, ethnography, restorative justice, and performance.
My most recent public programming project, "Ohio's Appalachian Folk Culture," employed regional, traditional folkways as means to facilitate and promote civic involvement, community pride, and cultural tourism. Other projects I have conducted include: "Inside Looking Out: Overcoming Violence and Abuse to Transform the Community," a literacy and arts program designed to help youth offenders serving adult sentences in Ohio prisons develop character and life skills, and heal from their experiences of abandonment, abuse, and violence; and "The Register of Very Special Places," an inventory of cultural landmark sites considered special to the life of communities throughout the North Country of upstate New York. The register is a central repository for information about the sites and a resource for historic preservation activities. I currently serve as the Area Chair for "Folklore and Popular Culture" within the National Popular Culture Association.
When I am not teaching or conducting research, you can find me playing video games such as Final Fantasy, Resident Evil, and Wii Sports. I love going to the movies (especially horror films) and reading mysteries. I'm married to a wonderful husband, Dave, who works for the Columbus Metropolitan Library as a reference librarian. We have five cats: Martin, Lewis, Hecubus, Elmer, and Xena. I'm originally from Seattle, Washington, and would like to eventually move back there someday.
