Paul Hondorp is Director of Choral Activities and Associate Professor of Music at Western Kentucky University, where he directs three university ensembles, teaches conducting and graduate literature. A California native, Dr. Hondorp received his DMA in Choral Conducting from Michigan State University, where he studied under Charles K. Smith, Jonathan Reed and David Rayl. Dr. Hondorp's conducting mentors have also included Alan Harler (Temple University), Lynn Bielefelt (Cal State Long Beach), and Thomas Davies (Cal Poly SLO). Prior to his arrival at WKU, Dr. Hondorp taught at the community college and high school level. He directed church choirs in California, Pennsylvania and Michigan, and is currently Director of Music at First Christian Church of Bowling Green.

Dr. Hondorp has served as an adjudicator, clinician and guest conductor for festivals of the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA) and the Music Educators National Conference (MENC) in Alabama, Arkansas, California, Pennsylvania, Kentucky, Indiana and Tennessee. Recent engagements include guest clinicianships with the Singapore Choral Resource Center and the Taipei International Choral Festival. In May of 2008, he led the WKU Chorale on a tour of Northern Italy, which included an invited performance in the Musica Ateneo Festival in Bologna.

 

Dr. Hondorp has recently accepted appointments as the Repertoire and Standards Chair for College/University for the Southern Division of ACDA, and served in that capacity for the state of Kentucky. He also serves as state representative and founding member of the National Collegiate Choral Organization. Dr. Hondorp was named College/University Teacher of the Year for 2004-2005 for KMEA District Three.

 

A lyric tenor, Dr. Hondorp performed with Oregon Bach Festival Chorus (under the direction of Helmuth Rilling) for six summers, and served on the faculty of the Berkshire Choral Festival in Sheffield, Massachusetts. Solo performances include concert work in Handel's Messiah (Bryn Athyn Cathedral), Handel's Samson (Handel Oratorio Society, California), Mozart Requiem (Idyllwild Arts Festival) and Starbuck in the world premiere of Gary Eister's opera Moby Dick. Professional recordings include ensemble performances with the Oregon Bach Festival (the late masses of FJ Haydn, Hannsler Records) and Hot Springs Festival Chorus (the choral music of Edmund Dede, Naxos) and solo work for an educational series of compact discs by GIA Publications.

 

Dr. Hondorp lives in Bowling Green with wife, soprano Jennifer Brennan-Hondorp, their son Brennan, and their daughter Finley.

WKU Chorale to Engage in Fall Performance Tour

The WKU Chorale will be engaged in a Fall Performance Tour.  This
flagship chorale ensemble, conducted by Paul Hondorp, will perform in
Kentucky at The Louisville Christian Academy, Paducah-Tilghman High School,
Marshall County High School, Meade County High School and John Hardin
High School.

WKU Conductor's Professional Development Workshop - November

The Conductor's Professional Development Workshop will be offered on
November 19-21, 2009, and will be limited to the first 16 enrollees who
will have the opportunity to work with conductors Richard Floyd
(University of Texas), Barry Kraus (Belmont University) and Gary
Schallert, Jeff Bright and Bill Scott (Western Kentucky University). 
After these slots are filled, applicants can attend the workshop through
the Observer Track.  The Conductor's Track is set at $100 and the
Observer Track is $60, mailed to WKU Band, Department of Music, 1906
College Heights Blvd., #41029, Bowling Green, KY 42101.

Van Meter Renovation Update

The construction crew for Van Meter renovations continue to move the schedule closer to the finish line.  It is anticipated that the renovations may be complete by the end of 2009 instead of the originally forecast June 2010.
