This document, revised in spring 2006, is a framework for the development of a foreign language curriculum that integrates well-known principles of second language acquisition with concrete guidelines for course content. It resulted from the efforts of the Communicative Competence Task Force, established in conjunction with a Title VI grant from the U.S. Department of Education (2000-2002).

The languages taught at WKU in the Department of Modern Languages and Intercultural Studies are all living languages. We decided to emphasize communication in our lower level courses, especially speaking and listening skills, in a manner consistent with discourse common to native speakers as they function in a typical cultural context. This emphasis implies a lexicon and linguistic functions appropriate in content to situations paralleling experiences our students might encounter in the target culture. The document uses as its basic structure the five "Cs" of the National Standards for Foreign Language teaching and learning: communication, cultures, connections, comparisons, communities.
