Full-time Experience

  • City editor, The Ledger, Lakeland, Fla.. Supervised staff of 29, directed local news operation including four bureaus. Assistant city editor until October 1988. 1985-1992.

  • Editor/reporter for New Zealand Press Association, Wellington, N.Z. Edited national news for N.Z. newspapers and Reuters. Legislative reporter for 1975 and 1976 New Zealand parliamentary sessions. 1974-1977.

  • Reporter for The Daily Post, Rotorua, N.Z. Reporter. Covered local government, science, health, forest industry, and general assignment. Some copy editing. 1972-1974.

Temporary/Part-time experience

  • Assistant metro editor at the Bradenton Herald in Florida. Assigned stories, coached writers, edited stories, helped plan daily, weekend and project coverage. Was acting opinion page editor for 2 1/2 weeks. Wrote 18 pieces on local, state, national and international issues. May-August 2002.

  • Writer/editor in the opinion section of the Spokesman- Review, Spokane, Wash., as a fellow of the Institute for Journalism Excellence sponsored by the American Society of Newspaper Editors. Wrote editorials, edited local columns and editorials, selected syndicated columns for publication. June-July 2000.

  • Writing coach for five Kentucky newspapers owned by Landmark Community Newspapers: The Casey County News, Liberty; The Cynthiana Democrat; the Henry County Local, New Castle; the Owenton News-Herald; and The Springfield Sun. July-August 1999.
