From Classroom to Career
How do you Present your Passion?
English majors are flexible and have many interests across disciplines and activities. Whether you are involved in extra curricular activities within the department or beyond, here are some ideas for “translating” your interests and passions into language that will fit well with resumes, cover letters, and statements of purpose. Present them in a way that connects these experiences to the position/institution you are applying to.
What experiences and activities from the classroom transfer to other settings?
Don’t forget to consider how even classroom requirements foster very specific abilities that can transfer to other settings:
-Written communication
-Editing (through peer workshops, etc.)
-Ability to conduct and organize research
-Public Speaking (class presentations and conducting class discussions)
-Ability to work in groups (achieving consensus/cooperation/collaboration)
-Technology skills (word processing, at minimum, but you may also have learned to make powerpoint presentations, web pages, etc.)
What experiences from extra-curricular activities transfer to other settings?
Emphasize abilities and experiences you gained through these opportunities:
Campus Organizations
-Leadership
-Specific Activities (think especially of fundraising, promotion/publicity, and anything that enabled you to interact with other groups/communities)
-Initiatives (emphasize ability to initiate and organize an event or activity)
Presenting or Publishing academic work beyond the classroom
-Conferences
-Publications (local, regional, national)
-Other public speeches/presentations (special events, etc.)
Community Service, including Service Learning
Tutoring or Teaching
