  • Mary Ellen Miller received the Spirit of Western Award
  • Sandra Hughes won the PCAL and the University Awards for Excellence in Teaching
  • Wes Berry and Fabian Alvarez were both nominated for the PCAL Teaching Award by their students
  • Tom Hunley and Kenny King received Kentucky Arts Council grants
  • John Hagaman was awarded $132,000 in national and state grants for teacher preparation for Writing Instruction
  • Five faculty were granted Regular Faculty Research Scholarships
  • Alison Ganze and Wes Berry received New Faculty Scholarships
  • Ted Hovet and Deb Logan received Summer Faculty Scholarships
  • Terry Elliott was awarded a Technology Liaisons Network Projects Grant to teach Writing Project Fellows how to integrate new technologies into their classrooms, especially web 2.0 collaborative and social networking tools
  • Deb Logan was featured in the WKU Scholar
  • Wes Berry was featured in the WKU Scholar
  • Elizabeth Winkler was invited to participate in an NEA grant to develop a linguistics program at a University of Texas regional campus; she also became asst. ed. of Issues in Intercultural Communication.
  • Tom Hunley edits Steel Toe Books, a poetry press he founded; he published three books of original poetry by minority writers this year
  • Angela Jones competed her 3rd year as faculty advisor of Arete, the national-award-winning Honors College newsletter, publishing 6 issues; she serves on the Honors Development Board as well.
  • Deb Logan is president of the Victorians Institute
  • Lloyd Davies is president of the Kentucky Philological Association
  • Two are officers in other national professional organizations (Davies, Christianity and Literature; Berry, Association for the Study of Literature and the Environment)  
  • John Hagaman serves on the Executive Committee of the Kentucky Council for the Teaching of English and Language Arts)
  •  Terry Elliott is a member of WKU’s first Educational Leadership Ph.D. cohort

 
Past Achievements and Awards

  • Tom Hunley won the Potter College Award for Excellence in Scholarship/Creativity.
  • Ted Hovet won the Potter Coller Award for Excellence in Teaching.
  • Jane Olmsted won the Arts Across Kentucky Fiction Award.
  • Jeff Fearnside (creative writing) and Fabian Alvarez (Gen Ed instructor) were both nominated for the Teaching Award by their students.
  • Wes Berry was awarded a Junior Faculty Grant.
  • Ted Hovet and Deb Logan were awarded Summer Faculty Scholarships.
  • Elizabeth Winkler was awarded a Summer Junior Faculty Scholarship.
  • Lloyd Davies, Niko Endres, and Deb Logan were awarded Faculty Research Grants.
  • Ted Hovet was awarded a Getty Library Research Grant (national).
  • Deb Logan was invited to participate in a Faculty Seminar on the Culture of India (and presented her experience at a FaCET colloquium).
  • John Hagaman was awarded $65,000 from the State Department of Education and $45,000 from the Federal government for the 22nd Annual Writing Project.
  • Alex Poole was the plenary speaker at the National Conference on First and Second Language Classroom Investigation in Bogota, Columbia.
  • Deb Logan delivered the keynote address at the Harriet Martineau Society in Boston.
  • Deb Logan was nominated for a prestigious international award, the Colby Prize, for her 5 volume collection of H. Martineau's letters.
  • Tom Hunley was nominated for two Pushcart Prizes (for poetry).
  • Niko Endres was featured in Western Scholar
  • Alex Poole was featured in Western Scholar.
  • Katie Green completed the (inaugural) Master Advisor Certificate.
  • Walker Rutledge was honored for 25 years of service as Sigma Tau Delta faculty sponsor.
  • Tom Hunley was featured in Western Scholar
