Get Involved

There are many ways to become involved with the costume shop.

Work Study Positions

Paid positions filled by students. These positions require previous experience with hand and machine sewing, and preferably the completion of Costume Technology class. Experience with overlock machines, various crafts, computers, and strong leadership skills are a plus. Positions will be announced when available.

Production Credit

Students enrolled in Prod. 3 through 8 may earn their points by working in the costume shop for 4 hours each week throughout part or all of the semester. (Also see wardrobe and make-up crew)

Designing

With permission of the costume design professor advanced students may earn production or practicum credit by designing children's, studio, or mainstage productions.

Assistant Designing

Assistant design positions are available for most mainstage shows with the permission of the costume design professor and/or the show's designer. Assistant designers may earn production or practicum credit upon completion of their assignment. Specific tasks are determined by the needs of the show and the skills of the individual in the position. The assistant designer may help with research, organization, paperwork, shopping, fittings, and pulling or renting of costume pieces. In addition this position requires attendance at dress rehearsals.

Wardrobe Supervisor and Crew

Wardrobe is responsible for maintaining the integrity of the costumes throughout the run of the production. Fifty points of prod credit is available to students serving on wardrobe crew. Duties of the wardrobe crew include assisting with quick changes, doing laundry, and performing repairs. In addition the wardrobe supervisor is responsible for working with the designer of the show to create dressing assignments and determining the needs for each quick change in the show. The wardrobe supervisor and crew are required to view a run through of the show, assist in the load in of costumes, and arrive promptly for all calls during dress rehearsal and the run of the show.

Make-Up Supervisor and Crew

The make-up supervisor is responsible for working with the costume designer of the production to assist with developing a cohesive make-up look for the show. The supervisor and crew are responsible for assisting performers in applying their make-up for each performance and doing the application of specialty make-up as needed. In order to serve as a makeup supervisor or crew member you must be enrolled in or have completed Makeup Class or have extensive previous experience. Production credit is available for these jobs and permission of the costume design professor and/or the designer of the show is required. Occassionally the needs of the show will allow for additional specialty positions related to this area (i.e. wigs or hair).
