Major in Broadcasting
Thanks for navigating to the Major in Broadcasting. This major is divided into three area of concentrations, Broadcast Journalism, Film and Video Production, and Station Operations and Management. Each concentration requires 39 hours to graduate with the major designation. All courses in each concentration enjoy access to new facilities housed in the Mass Media and Technology Hall, which was first opened to classes in August 2003. The first broadcast production course at Western was a radio class offered in 1939. The major was established in 1965. This tenure has provided us a rich history in broadcasting, which translates into many alumni and friends 'out there.'
Our facilities include a three-camera digital television studio, two Avid editing labs with a total of twenty-eight stations, running editing programs from Avid DV Pro to Avid DS. Adobe Photoshop, AfterEffects, and Newtek Lightwave 3D Animation programs add to the power of the Avids.
For those who prefer Apple's Final Cut Pro, we have an 18-station MAC lab running FCP4. We have 20 video field kits, of which 15 are Sony DVCAM camcorders, with tripods, microphones and light kits. For the film folks, we have eight 16MM film cameras and one Oxberry dual-column animation stand.
Our 24/7/365-student radio station WWHR-91.7 has a 20 ' 30 mile range. The station and a control room with a 53 input digital audio board share a recording studio in the Mass Media & Tech Hall.
