What is SCORM | How to get SCORM | How to use SCORM | Control student interactions

Use PADs with your favorite Learning Management System, (LMS) such as Blackboard, Moodle, WebCT, Desire2Learn, etc. All you have to do is obtain a PADs SCORM package and import it into your LMS as you would other content, set gradebook values, and make the assignment available.

What is SCORM?

The Sharable Content Object Resource Model is a standard for packaging web-based content that allows it to interact with a LMS system, including storing results of student activity to a database. This allows you to post PADs exercises on your favorite LMS and have the system automatically grade student work and store points in the gradebook. For more information about SCORM, you can visit Advanced Distributed Learning (http://www.adlnet.org) that sets the standards.

How do I obtain a SCORM package?

First, you must choose which exercises you want in the package. There are several ways to do this:
  • Browse or search the database, and click the checkbox for the exercises you want to use. After you have found all the ones you want, click the "Link/download" button at the bottom of the search page or Exercises->Download from the menu at the top.
  • You may find them through an exernal source, such as the comPADRE Digital Library (http://www.compadre.org) which will take you straight to the download page with the particular exercise or groups of exercises selected.
  • You may also enter exercise or sequence id numbers by hand on the Download page (under 'Exercises').
If you wish, look at the links to double check that is what you want, and then hit the "SCORM" button below. Save the zip file to disk.

How to I assign a PADs assignment?

Login to you LMS and tell to add content. Upload the PADs SCORM package into the location you want it. You should have several options about recording scores in the grade book, availability, etc., which vary in details from LMS to LMS. Set those options as appropriate, and then finish posting the assignment. You may need to specify that it is a SCORM 1.2 package.

How do I limit student attempts, etc.?

The SCORM 1.2 standard is somewhat limited, so once students are viewing a page, there is no way to limit the number of times they press the "Check Work" button. Depending on your LMS, you may be able to limit the number of sessions someone could work on/view the assessment. If you want better control, you should think about using a system where there is direct support for PADs built in, such as WebAssign.
