Students and faculty from Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green, KY and Winston-Salem State University in Winston-Salem, NC participated in a comprehensive study abroad project centered around the Summer Olympics during August 2008.  The group spent two weeks in China, departing on August 3rd and returning on August 17th. The group spent time in Shanghai, Taiyuan, and Beijing.   

This project was designed to provide students with first-hand study and experience at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China. The experience consisted of three main concentrations.

1. Attending special lectures designed for the group. The topics included Chinese culture, economy and politics in China as a rising country, Chinese traditional medicine, martial arts, physical education in schools, the making of the Chinese top athletes, etc.

 2. Observing selected Olympic events, including weightlifting, canoeing\kayak, archery and handball, as well as group viewing of the opening ceremony.

3. Visiting cultural and historical destinations in China. The group saw different parts of the country, ancient and modern, cultural and folk, history and tradition, heritage and natural attractions, and people’s daily life and leisure activities. Some of these destinations and activities included Forbidden City, Great Wall, Summer Palace, Temple of Heaven, Tiananmen Square, a Chinese acrobatics show, an international tea show, a folk art show, and a visit to Pinyao City.
