Green, Ky. - Western Kentucky University’s Owensboro Regional Campus has added an Educational Leadership Doctoral (EdD) degree to its growing list of programs offered locally.
A question and answer session about the doctoral program is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Sept. 24 in the Advanced Technological Center at the campus of Owensboro Community and Technical College on New Hartford Road. Interested students are asked to register for the sessions by Sept. 22.
Beginning Summer 2010, courses will be offered at the WKU-Owensboro campus each semester, making the degree attainable locally, even for those students who also work full- or part-time.
Lewatis McNeal, WKU’s graduate advisor in Owensboro, believes that bringing the doctorate in educational leadership to Owensboro will provide an excellent opportunity for individuals to develop or enhance their leadership skills. “With the four program concentrations, this degree will provide educational opportunities to those seeking a terminal degree in education,” McNeal said.
WKU’s unique education doctorate addresses the needs of practicing professionals to develop leadership skills in cross-disciplinary settings. The goals of the curriculum are to increase candidates’ understanding of human learning, improve the organizations within which candidates work, and teach candidates to conduct career-relevant research, thereby increasing their problem-solving abilities within their varied work settings.
The program allows students to choose from four specialized tracks, designed to meet the increasing demand for leadership to take education in Kentucky to new levels. Students can choose to focus on P-12 Administrative Leadership, Postsecondary Leadership, Teacher Leadership, or Organizational Leadership as they progress through the program.
“The WKU doctoral program is intended to prepare ‘practitioner scholars’ who will translate the very best, research-based leadership into their daily practice,” according to Dr. Christopher Wagner, program director. “It is also a program of study that is compatible with full-time employment.”
