Bowling
Green, Ky. - Commencement Weekend at Western Kentucky University began Friday night as more than
370 graduate students were recognized at Diddle Arena.
WKU presented 367 master’s degrees, seven specialist degrees and six recipients of the doctoral degree offered cooperatively by WKU and University of Louisville.
Travis John Mattingly of Loretto in Marion County received the John D. Minton Graduate Student Award for Outstanding Contributions to WKU. The award was presented by Kentucky Chief Justice John D. Minton Jr.
The award recognizes a graduate student for outstanding contributions to the academic discipline while pursuing a graduate degree at WKU. Dr. Minton, WKU’s first graduate dean, a longtime administrator, history faculty member and the University’s fifth president, died in 2008.
Mattingly has demonstrated a high level of scholarly performance and distinguished himself in the Technology Management program, while working full-time as project manager/application engineer at LINAK US, Inc., a Louisville-based design and manufacturing firm of electric linear actuator systems. In his spare time, he continues management of his family’s farming operation.
WKU also recognized the outstanding graduate student from each academic college.
College of Health and Human Services: Wanda S. Hogan of Franklin, Master of Science in Nursing.
Potter College of Arts & Letters: Michelle L. Glorioso of Bowling Green, Master of Public Administration.
Ogden College of Science and Engineering: Ronnie D. Leeper of Bowling Green, Master of Science in Geoscience.
Gordon Ford College of Business: Sarah Murphy of Bowling Green, Master of Business Administration.
University College: Shavonna Smith of Bowling Green, Master of Arts in Administrative Dynamics.
College of Education and Behavioral Sciences: Juliana Middleton of Bowling Green, Master of Arts in Psychology, Industrial/Organizational concentration.
Recipients of the cooperative doctoral degree in educational leadership were: Cathy Hoots Abell, Lynn Donnelly Austin, Winifred Riney Cohron, Elizabeth Romero Fuerte and James B. McCaslin, all of Bowling Green; and Tricia Ann Jordan of Madisonville.
Provost Barbara Burch also recognized Dr. Kaveh Khatir, who is retiring from the Department of Architectural and Manufacturing Sciences.
Commencement continues
Commencement Weekend at WKU continues Saturday and Sunday.
At 10 a.m. Saturday, 55 students will graduate from the Gatton Academy of Mathematics and Science in Kentucky at WKU. The ceremony will be held at Diddle Arena.
WKU’s undergraduate commencement again will be divided into two ceremonies on Sunday at Diddle Arena. The ceremony for students in Potter College of Arts & Letters, Gordon Ford College of Business, University College and Bowling Green Community College will begin at 1 p.m. The ceremony for College of Health and Human Services, Ogden College of Science and Engineering, and College of Education and Behavioral Sciences will begin at 5 p.m.
