Bowling
Green, Ky. - According to the Kentucky Council on Postsecondary Education, as many as 68 percent of incoming college freshmen will need one or more developmental courses in reading, writing and math to help them prepare for their college career. Nearly one-quarter will need help in all three areas. Students are now required to take those developmental classes during their first year of college.
The Bowling Green Community College at WKU wants to assist students in getting a head start on those developmental courses by offering a Summer Early Entry program. The seven-week program will begin June 15 and end Aug. 6 with classes meeting Monday through Thursday. Students will break from classes the week of July 6.
The program is specifically designed to serve students whose ACT scores indicate a need for additional help in preparation for college-level course work in the areas of English, Algebra and Reading. By completing the necessary developmental classes during the summer, students will be prepared to begin sequential 100-level courses in the fall semester.
“On a positive note, students who need help at the beginning of their college career most often successfully complete programs and graduate,” according to Sherry Reid, dean of the Bowling Green Community College.
Sixty-six percent of the students receiving associate degrees and 42 percent of those earning baccalaureate degrees in 2007-08 had taken at least one developmental course.
Summer Early Entry campus visits will be available in March. Families are encouraged to visit the Community College to get additional information about the program, the admissions process, how to register for classes, and more. Financial aid may be available. The deadline to apply for financial aid is April 16.
