Green, Ky. - Western Kentucky University’s Department of Music along with Continuing Education invites high school musicians to come be a Hilltopper this summer.
Participating students will work with WKU faculty in fun and challenging workshops. This is a great opportunity for students who are considering majoring in music in college or who simply love to sing or play their instrument and want to get a jumpstart on summer practice.
Woodwinds and Brass Chamber Ensemble Camps are scheduled for June 11-13. Vocal and Strings Chamber Camps are June 14-17. Interested students should click on the Youth Summer Music Camps link on the Continuing Education website at www.wku.edu/ce for full details.
Camp Directors are WKU faculty from the Department of Music. These music professionals have a variety of musical and teaching backgrounds.
“This is the first comprehensive music camp for the WKU Department of Music to offer in many years, returning to a tradition that is important to us,” according to Mitzi Groom, Music Department Head. “We would love to share the fun of making music with passionate pre-college musicians and look forward to having them on the Hill.”
Students will learn about many aspects of performing on their instrument in a chamber music setting. Musical activities will include ensemble rehearsals, master classes, and performances by both faculty and students. In addition to the musical offerings, there will be opportunities for students to spend time with one another and to enjoy campus life. Activities will include time at the Preston Health and Activities Center. All music camps will culminate in a concert for campers’ family and friends.
The early registration deadline is April 10 with a fee of $185 for the Clarinet, Trombone, Double Reed, Flute and Tuba camps. After April 10 the registration fee is $225. The early registration fee for Vocal Camp and Strings on the Hill is $250. After April 10 the registration fee is $285. Late applications will be accepted on the basis of available space. The cost of the camps includes housing, meals, and a pass to the Preston Health and Activities Center.
