WKU 2009 Winter Term Begins; Enrollment Continues To Grow

January 05, 2009

Bowling Green, Ky. - The 2009 Western Kentucky University Winter Term is under way with the number of students taking classes again topping the mark set in previous years.

This is the fourth year that WKU has offered Winter Term, and while many other universities have also begun to offer a similar option, WKU has gained the reputation of being a leader in Winter Term programs in the country. This year’s Winter Term runs from Jan. 5-23.

More than 2,500 students are taking classes, with approximately 255 sections being offered during the 2009 Winter Term. Fifty-four percent of enrollments are online, a number that continues to grow each year.

In addition to the online courses and traditional face-to-face courses offered on the hill, WKU Winter Term offers courses at the Community College on South Campus, and at the regional campuses in Glasgow, Elizabethtown/Radcliff/Fort Knox and Owensboro.

Winter Term enrollment was 1,580 in 2006, 1,924 in 2007 and 2,242 in 2008.

“Enrollment numbers are looking very healthy,” said Beth Laves, director of Winter Term. “We’re especially happy about the increase that we’re seeing in graduate enrollment numbers, particularly in the College of Education.”
The Community College has also seen a significant increase in enrollment.

The Winter Term program is planning a Networking lunch on Wednesday, Jan. 14, for Winter Term students and faculty.  The lunch will be held at Fresh Food Company in the Downing University Center from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Students make faster progress toward graduation by taking classes during Winter Term. Winter Term also gives students additional opportunities to take classes that are difficult to get into or prerequisites they need for other courses.
