WKU Offering Music Lessons For Oboe And Bassoon

January 16, 2009

Bowling Green, Ky. - Western Kentucky University is now offering a Pre-College Double Reeds program for late elementary, junior high and high school students who play or who are interested in playing the oboe or bassoon.

According to Dr. Michele Fiala, “Students who play the oboe or bassoon are often the only performers in their school on those instruments. This program will give them the help they need to learn these instruments and the encouragement they need to grow musically.”

Students enrolled in the program will receive weekly private lessons on the WKU campus. The instructors are advanced WKU music majors supervised by Dr. Fiala, who teaches oboe and bassoon at the university.

“There have been strong connections shown between musical skills and math skills, and those connections seem even stronger with the double reeds,” Dr. Fiala said.  “Students who play the oboe or bassoon are often the brightest students in their classes, and many receive college scholarships.”

Students interested in enrolling should contact the Continuing Education Department at (270) 745-1912 or Michele Fiala in the Music Department at (270) 745-8744 or michele.fiala@wku.edu.
