WKU Forensic Team Wins At Point Loma, IUPUI Tournaments

Bowling Green, Ky. - Western Kentucky University forensic team members traveled to San Diego, Indianapolis and Murray to take part in three tournaments the weekend of Feb. 7-8.

The Point Loma tournament in San Diego hosted nearly 100 parliamentary debate teams. WKU swept the overall sweepstakes and the debate sweepstakes, and closed out the final round in Lincoln-Douglas Debate.

In the IUPUI tournament in Indianapolis, WKU placed first in sweepstakes, with the University of Miami at Ohio second and Ball State University third. Carrie Guggenmos and Jason Carey placed second and third, respectively, in the Curtis Memorial Oratorical Contest, which awards cash prices.

Results from the Point Loma/Southwest College Swing are as follows:
Jessica Furgerson, a junior from San Antonio, tournament champion in extemporaneous speaking, second in communication analysis and second in Lincoln-Douglas debate in the Point Loma portion.

Thomas Schally, a senior from Stillwater, Minn., tournament champion in Lincoln-Douglas debate in the Point Loma portion; 20th parliamentary debate speaker in the Point Loma portion.

Sarah Spiker, a sophomore from Snohomish, Wash., third in informative speaking and semifinalist in Lincoln-Douglas debate in the Point Loma portion.

Rachel Mosley, a senior from Lake Tahoe, Calif., sixth parliamentary debate speaker in the Round Robin portion; quarterfinalist in Lincoln-Douglas debate in the Point Loma portion.

Elizabeth Mullins, a junior from Plymouth, Mass., ninth parliamentary debate speaker in the Point Loma portion; quarterfinalist in Lincoln-Douglas debate in the Point Loma portion.

Brian Bloss, a senior from Coppell, Texas, seventh in extemporaneous speaking and octafinalist in Lincoln-Douglas debate in the Point Loma portion.

Brandon Merrell, a sophomore from Snohomish, Wash., fourth in communication analysis and octafinalist in Lincoln-Douglas debate in the Point Loma portion.

Frank Murdock, a freshman from Kingston, Wash., octafinalist in Lincoln-Douglas debate in the Point Loma portion.

Kelcy Hathaway, a junior from Garden City, Kan., seventh parliamentary debate speaker in the Round Robin portion.

Kaleb Jessee, a junior from Garden City, Kan., 11th parliamentary debate speaker in the Point Loma portion.

Team of Brandon Merrell (Snohomish, Wash.) and Josh Ramsey (Fort Scott, Kan.), second in parliamentary debate in the Point Loma portion.

Team of Logan Parke (Little Rock, Ark.) and Thomas Schally (Stillwater, Minn.), semifinalist in parliamentary debate in the Point Loma portion.

Team of Kelcy Hathaway (Garden City, Kan.) and Rachel Mosley (Lake Tahoe, Calif.), semifinalist in parliamentary debate in the Round Robin portion; octafinalist in parliamentary debate in the Point Loma portion.

Team of Brian Bloss (Coppell, Texas) and Kaleb Jessee (Garden City, Kan.), quarterfinalist in parliamentary debate in the Point Loma portion.

Celena Allen, a freshman from Hayward, Calif., tournament champion in dramatic interpretation and second in poetry interpretation.

Ganer Newman, a senior from Sherman Oaks, Calif., tournament champion in prose interpretation and third in poetry interpretation.

Jeffrey Boggess, a junior from Hayward, Calif., tournament champion in duo interpretation (with Corey Gomez).
Maggie Woodward, a freshman from Collierville, Tenn., second in informative speaking and fifth in communication analysis.

Carrie Guggenmos, a junior from Fullerton, Calif., second in poetry interpretation.

Matt Whitman, a freshman from Austin, Texas, third in extemporaneous speaking and fourth in communication analysis.

Jason Carey, a junior from Hutchinson, Kan., fourth in extemporaneous speaking and fifth in impromptu speaking.

Rachel Wigginton, a senior from Glendale, fourth in persuasive speaking.

Rob Strobel, a sophomore from Lexington, fifth in extemporaneous speaking and sixth in impromptu speaking.

Results from the Murray State “Ruby Crider” Swing are as follows:
Joele Denis, a senior from Hollywood, Fla., tournament champion in duo interpretation (with Adam Swanson) and second in impromptu speaking in the Ruby Crider portion; second in duo interpretation (with Adam Swanson) in the Alumni portion.

Adam Swanson, a junior from Rosemount, Minn., tournament champion in duo interpretation (with Joele Denis) and second in duo interpretation (with Mario Nguyen) in the Ruby Crider portion; second in duo interpretation (with Joele Denis) in the Alumni portion.

Desiree Guerrero, a sophomore from Fullerton, Calif., second in after-dinner speaking, fifth in pentathalon, fifth in informative speaking, fifth in prose interpretation and sixth in communication analysis in the Ruby Crider portion.

Robert Whittley, a sophomore from Glenview, Ill., tournament champion in prose interpretation and third in duo interpretation (with Chris Hiller) in the Alumni portion; sixth in duo interpretation (with Chris Hiller) in the Ruby Crider portion.

Colby Holt, a sophomore from Paducah, second in informative speaking in the Ruby Crider portion; fifth in prose interpretation in the Alumni portion.

Mario Nguyen, a freshman from Plano, Texas, second in duo interpretation (with Adam Swanson) in the Ruby Crider portion; fifth in impromptu speaking in the Alumni portion.
