Green, Ky. - The Cyber Defense Laboratory, located at the Western Kentucky University Center for Research and Development, has been awarded $1.35 million for an 18-month cooperative agreement with Electronic Warfare Associates and the University of Arizona to work on one of the nation’s top priorities – cybersecurity, the protection and encryption of digital data, identities, finances and transactions, and intrusion detection and prevention methodologies.
The collaborative research team will be led by Director Dr. Keith Andrews with assistance from Dr. Phil Womble, the lab’s founder, along with students, research scientists and other members of WKU’s Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, the Department of Sociology, the Department of Folk Studies and Anthropology, and the Department of Physics and Astronomy.
The Cyber Defense Lab is developing a training and research facility with an initial 200 Terabyte data center that will be the hub of the Cyber Defense Laboratory operations. This award provides the Cyber Defense Lab the ability to be a part of economic growth for the region as well as to provide employment, internships and graduate assistantships at WKU.
These goals have been made possible by the respective department heads and associated deans including Dr. Blaine Ferrell of the Ogden College of Science and Engineering and Dr. David Lee of Potter College of Arts and Letters for their vision and foresight to build a project that crosses college boundaries, engages students in forefront research and allows faculty to exchange ideas and develop new research and teaching experiences.
