RAINN DAY 2008 Set For Thursday On WKU Campus

September 23, 2008

Bowling Green, Ky. - Western Kentucky University and Hope Harbor: A Sexual Trauma Recovery Center are hosting RAINN DAY 2008 (formerly GET CARDED) Thursday on the WKU campus.

RAINN DAY is an annual national event, sponsored by RAINN (Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network), aimed at educating students about sexual assault. According to RAINN, “Volunteers will distribute wallet cards and information about the National Sexual Assault Hotline to 1.5 million college students on more than 1200 college campuses in 50 states and the District of Columbia.”

The distribution of the GET CARDED cards will take place Thursday in three locations on the main campus of WKU. Volunteers will be at Downing University Center and at Garrett Conference Center from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and at Preston Health and Activities Center from 2 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Cards will also be distributed at WKU’s Bowling Green Community College at the South Campus from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Elizabeth Mohon, Sexual Assault Services Coordinator at WKU, has been coordinating the event with the cooperation of Hope Harbor, Inc. and many student and staff volunteers, including the Topperwell Peer Health Educators, in order to ensure that 7,000 cards are made available to students.

“Our partnership with Hope Harbor is ideal and necessary because it is important for students to know of the resources on campus and in our community,” she said. “With ages 16-24 being four times at a greater risk than that of any other age group, it’s imperative that we work together to help break the silence against this social epidemic.”
