WKU Health Services Hosting State Group's Fall Meeting

September 12, 2008

Bowling Green, Ky. - Western Kentucky University Health Services will host the fall meeting for the Kentucky College Health Association (KCHA) on Oct. 9.

The meeting is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and will include a tour of WKU’s new Health Services building, two guest speakers and roundtable discussions. Lunch will be provided to all participants by Academic Health Plans (AHP), a student health insurance partner.

Libby Greaney, director of WKU’s Health Services, is the current president of the KCHA.
Registration is limited to 30 and is free to Kentucky College Health Professionals.

Two guest speakers will make presentations on two college health topics.

At 9:30 a.m., Dr. Robert Hilgers, professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Louisville Medical School and founder of the Kentucky Cervical Cancer Coalition, will speak on research in cervical cancer, the latest on vaccines, updates on his work with the coalition and an update on a grant proposal for peer health educators for education and awareness on this issue.

At 1 p.m., Dr. Karl Laves, licensed counseling psychologist and assistant director of WKU’s Counseling and Testing Center, will present Question Persuade Refer (QPR) Gatekeeper training, a standardized suicide prevention program endorsed by the Kentucky Suicide Prevention Group. QPR, a mental health training program that parallels CPR, provides basic skills that can be used with a suicidal person until that person can be treated by a professional. QPR is quickly becoming a preferred method to prepare faculty and staff to work with students that may be depressed or suicidal. Gatekeeper Certificates will be awarded for those who attend this session.
