General Motors Vice President To Visit WKU On Wednesday

Bowling Green, Ky. - Dan Hancock, vice president global engineering for General Motors Powertrain, will visit Western Kentucky University on Wednesday (Oct. 1).

In a presentation at 10:30 a.m. at Grise Hall Auditorium, Hancock will focus on where GM is headed, especially with future technology such as fuel cells, hydrogen, electric cars, hybrids and more. Two fuel cell Equinox vehicles will be on display during Hancock’s visit to the WKU campus.

Hancock, a native of Indiana, represents GM Powertrain on GM’s North American Strategy Board. He is chairman of the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) Foundation Board of Trustees and served as President of the International Federation of Automotive Engineering Societies (FISITA) from 2004 to 2006.

Hancock received a master’s degree in mechanical engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1973 and a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from the General Motors Institute in 1974.

He joined General Motors in 1968 and held various engineering positions within Allison Transmission Division, which became later Detroit Diesel Allison Division in Indianapolis. In 1983 he became chief engineer for two-cycle diesels at Detroit Diesel Allison Division in Redford, Mich. In 1987, he joined the Chevrolet-Pontiac-GM of Canada Group as chief engineer of advanced powertrain and became technical director in 1991. One year later, he was appointed chief engineer for V6 and V8 engines.

In 1994, he was appointed director, transmission engineering, GM Powertrain. In 1997, he returned to Indianapolis where he was named president, Allison Transmission Division. He was named chief executive officer, Fiat-GM Powertrain, in 2000 and was based in Turin, Italy.

He was named GM Powertrain vice president, global engineering in March 2005.
