WKU Forensic Team First In Debate, Second Overall At Purdue

Bowling Green, Ky. - Western Kentucky University’s Forensic Team placed first in debate sweepstakes, second overall and fifth in individual events sweepstakes last weekend at the Purdue University “Boilermaker Invitational” in West Lafayette, Ind.

WKU closed out the final round of Lincoln-Douglas debate. In the team's first event of the season Ohio University placed first and Texas Southern University placed third overall. WKU also placed first in Debate Sweepstakes, ahead of Cedarville University and Hillsdale College.

Eight members of the WKU team competed only in debate, extemporaneous speaking and impromptu in the Sept. 12-14 tournament. The following students placed in the final rounds:

Josh Ramsey, a junior from Fort Scott, Kan., tournament co-champion in Lincoln-Douglas debate, first Lincoln-Douglas debate speaker and octafinalist in parliamentary debate (with Brandon Merrell).

Elizabeth Mullins, a junior from Plymouth, Mass., tournament co-champion in Lincoln-Douglas debate, fifth parliamentary debate speaker, fifth Lincoln-Douglas debate speaker and octafinalist in parliamentary debate (with Jessica Furgerson).

Brian Bloss, a senior from Coppell, Texas, tournament champion in parliamentary debate (with Kaleb Jessee) and quarterfinalist in Lincoln-Douglas debate.

Kaleb Jessee, a junior from Garden City, Kan., tournament champion in parliamentary debate (with Brian Bloss).
Brandon Merrell, a sophomore from Snohomish, Wash., semifinalist in Lincoln-Douglas debate, third Lincoln-Douglas debate speaker and octafinalist in parliamentary debate (with Josh Ramsey).

Sarah Spiker, a sophomore from Snohomish, Wash., fourth in extemporaneous speaking, quarterfinalist in Lincoln-Douglas debate and octafinalist in parliamentary debate (with Frank Murdock).

Jessica Furgerson, a junior from San Antonio, Texas, second in extemporaneous speaking, eighth parliamentary debate speaker and octafinalist in parliamentary debate (with Elizabeth Mullins).

Frank Murdock, a freshman from Kingston, Wash., octafinalist in parliamentary debate (with Sarah Spiker).
