WKU Offers Workshops For Student Business Competition

October 29, 2008

Bowling Green, Ky. - Western Kentucky University’s Office of Research and Economic Development and the Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation are offering a series of workshops for students interested in entering this year’s business plan competition.

In the non-credit series of three workshops, WKU students will learn about the various aspects of business start-up, protection of their idea, developing a business plan, and where and how to seek funding for the business launch. The workshops will be followed by a student business plan competition on their unique product ideas.

A number of successful international companies were started by student entrepreneurs, such as Google, Dell, Yahoo, Netscape and Facebook.

The winner of the competition will be eligible to receive $3,000 seed money, mentoring and guidance to conduct the feasibility on the product idea and develop a prototype at WKU.

“The goal is to help students translate their dreams into realities by converting their unique product ideas into prototypes,” said Dr. Sadiq Shah, associate vice president for Research and Economic Development.

The winner also will be linked with further funding opportunities to support the launch of the business, Dr. Shah said.

The seed money for the winner is provided by the WKU Research Foundation, Inc.

This competition is open to students from all disciplines and colleges. Students must register and attend the three non-credit workshop series to participate in the competition.

The workshops (all at 6 p.m. in Downing University Center, room 310) are “Entrepreneurship an American Dream for Financial Freedom” on Nov. 6; “Business Plan for the American Dream” on Nov. 11; and “Raising Capital for the American Dream” on Nov. 13.

For information or to register for the workshops, contact the Office of Research and Economic Development at 270-745-ORED (6733).
