WKU Nonprofit Program Student Interns With ONE Campaign

October 07, 2008

Bowling Green, Ky. - Charlie Harris, a student in Western Kentucky University’s Nonprofit Administration (American Humanics) minor program, will complete an internship this academic year with the national organization, the ONE Campaign.

The ONE Campaign seeks to raise public awareness about the issues of global poverty, hunger, disease and efforts to fight such problems in developing countries. Last year WKU students claimed the top prize in the ONE Campaign Campus Challenge, giving WKU the title of being the “Most Globally Active and Aware Campus” in the nation. WKU beat more than 1,500 other schools including the top-tiered schools like Princeton and George Washington.

Harris, a sophomore from Morganfield, will hold the position of Campus Outreach Ambassador for the Campus Challenge. This internship involves reaching out and organizing student leaders on college campuses across the country in their efforts to “Make Poverty History,” the mantra of the ONE Campaign.

WKU efforts to keep up with the challenge are already starting. On Oct. 17, WKU will be hosting Stand Up Kentucky at 6 p.m. at the Ivan Wilson Fine Arts Center Amphitheatre. The event will be a part of an international day of action for the eradication of poverty.

WKU students involved with the ONE Campaign and the group that spearheads its efforts on WKU’s campus, Americans for Informed Democracy, are challenging students, community members, school administration and government officials to step into the shoes of the impoverished and attempt to live on $2 for that day. The event that night will bring everyone together in that experience as they will stand together with more than 50 million people around the world, committing to bringing an end to extreme global poverty.
