Harry Boyte To Visit WKU Oct. 20-21 For Lecture, Workshop

Bowling Green, Ky. -Dr. Harry Boyte, Senior Fellow at the Hubert H. Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs and founder/co-founder of the Center for Democracy and Citizenship at the University of Minnesota, will visit Western Kentucky University Oct. 20-21.
 
During his visit to WKU, Boyte will be giving a public address titled “The Struggle for the Soul of America – Regional universities and the future of democracy.”  His public lecture will take place at 7 p.m. Monday (Oct. 20) at Mass Media & Technology Hall Auditorium. His talk draws from his most recent book “The Citizen Solution:  How you can make a difference.”

While at WKU, he will be meeting with a number of groups on civic agency. In cooperation with the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU), Boyte is leading the new Civic Agency Initiative. The purpose of this unique initiative is to create projects and programs that help students to develop the kind of skills, attitudes and capacities that will make them concerned and effective citizens in their communities.  WKU is one of 16 schools participating in this initiative. 

Along with his public lecture, Boyte will be co-conducting a workshop on “Organizing as Strategy for Culture Change” from 12:30 p.m. to  4 p.m. Tuesday (Oct. 21) at the Carroll Knicely Conference Center. The workshop, conducted with Maria Avila, director of the Center for Community Based Learning at Occidental College in Los Angeles, will explore ways in which collaboration between universities and communities lead to cultural and societal change.
