Green, Ky. - A marathon recital, for which students in Western Kentucky University’s pre-college strings program must memorize two or more pieces of music, will be held at the Ivan Wilson Fine Arts Center Recital Hall on Friday (Oct. 17).
The concert begins at 5:30 p.m. and admission is free to the public. Strings students will display their orchestra skills on violin, viola and cello.
“This concert gives our young students the challenge of performing for a longer period of time and keeping their concentration through several pieces,” said Sarah Berry, one of the instructors in the strings program.
Memorizing multiple pieces of music takes a great deal of practice and concentration, and some students will be performing three or even four pieces. Students have a great opportunity to overcome nervousness about performing in public.
“Our students have been challenged to practice more in preparing for the Marathon Recital. It has been so rewarding to see the progress they have made in working up several solos for one concert,” Berry said.
More recitals are planned for the near future. Strings students will hold a Cello Recital at 6 p.m. Nov. 12 and a Violin/Viola Recital at 7 p.m. Dec. 5.
WKU’s Music Department and the Division of Extended Learning and Outreach (DELO) developed the pre-college string development program in 2003 to offer high quality instruction in orchestral stringed instruments in a nurturing environment.
