Green, Ky. - Western Kentucky University forensic team members traveled to Tuscaloosa, Ala., and Portland, Ore., to take part in two tournaments the weekend of Oct. 11-12.
Seventeen members traveled to the Alabama Crimson Classic Tournament on the campus of the University of Alabama, where WKU was crowned overall sweepstakes champion, topping teams from Berry College and the University of Mississippi.
Six members of the debate team traveled to the Lewis and Clark Pioneer Invitational, advancing all members to elimination rounds.
Results from the Alabama Crimson Classic Forensics Tournament are as follows:
Lauren Nelson, a senior from Wheaton, Ill., tournament champion in persuasive speaking, first in individual sweepstakes, third in dramatic interpretation, third in after-dinner speaking, third in communication analysis and fifth in extemporaneous speaking in the Alumni portion; tournament champion in persuasive speaking, tournament champion in individual sweepstakes, second in extemporaneous speaking, second in communication analysis, fifth in prose interpretation and sixth in after-dinner speaking in the Alabama portion.
Joele Denis, a senior from Hollywood, Fla., tournament champion in prose interpretation, tournament champion in programmed oral interpretation, and fifth in impromptu speaking in the Alumni portion; tournament champion in prose interpretation, tournament champion in programmed oral interpretation, and third in impromptu in the Alabama portion.
J.D. VanSlyke, a senior from Wylie, Texas, tournament champion in informative speaking and seventh in impromptu speaking in the Alumni portion; third in poetry interpretation, fourth in informative speaking and fifth in impromptu speaking in the Alabama portion.
Mario Nguyen, a freshman from Plano, Texas, tournament champion in after-dinner speaking in the Alumni portion.
Jason Carey, a junior from Hutchinson, Kan., sixth in persuasive speaking and sixth in impromptu speaking in the Alumni portion; tournament champion in extemporaneous speaking in the Alabama portion.
Drew Horner, a junior from Morristown, Tenn., second in persuasive speaking in the Alumni portion; second in persuasive speaking in the Alabama portion.
Taron Grizzell, a freshman from Union City, Calif., second in after-dinner speaking in the Alumni portion; second in after-dinner speaking in the Alabama portion.
Michael Courtney, a sophomore from Mayfield, second in dramatic interpretation and fourth in prose interpretation in the Alumni portion.
Khristan Solliday, a freshman from Mitchell, Ind., second in communication analysis in the Alumni portion; fifth in communication analysis in the Alabama portion.
Maggie Woodward, a freshman from Collierville, Tenn., third in persuasive speaking in the Alumni portion; fourth in persuasive speaking in the Alabama portion.
Jeffrey Boggess, a junior from Hayward, Calif., second in dramatic interpretation in the Alumni portion; seventh in poetry interpretation in the Alabama portion.
Lillian Schoer, a junior from Billings, Mont., sixth in after-dinner speaking in the Alumni portion; third in dramatic interpretation in the Alabama portion.

Jessica Furgerson, a junior from San Antonio, Texas, tournament champion in extemporaneous speaking, second parliamentary debate speaker and semifinalist in parliamentary debate (with Elizabeth Mullins).
Rachel Mosley, a senior from Lake Tahoe, Calif., top parliamentary debate speaker and octafinalist in parliamentary debate (with Kelcy Hathaway).
Elizabeth Mullins, a junior from Plymouth, Mass., semifinalist in parliamentary debate (with Jessica Furgerson) and fourth parliamentary debate speaker.
Logan Parke, a junior from Little Rock, Ark., third parliamentary debate speaker and octafinalist in parliamentary debate (with Thomas Schally).
Thomas Schally, a senior from Stillwater, Minn., fifth parliamentary debate speaker and octafinalist in parliamentary debate (with Logan Parke).
Kelcy Hathaway, a junior from Garden City, Kan., seventh parliamentary debate speaker and octafinalist in parliamentary debate (with Rachel Mosley).
