High School Robotics Competition Saturday At WKU

November 06, 2008

Bowling Green, Ky. - About 100 students from nine area schools will compete Saturday in the ninth annual Kentucky Bluegrass High School Robotics Competition, hosted by Western Kentucky University’s Department of Engineering.

The event begins with registration at 8 a.m., followed by peer review at 9 and the competition from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Complex for Engineering and Biological Sciences.

Teams build a robot using construction materials provided by WKU. The robots must be able to pick up and move a variety of objects in a series of competitions with other teams’ robots.

Schools with teams competing on Saturday are Warren Central, Warren East, Spencer County, Hart County, Old Union, Barren County, Nelson County, Metcalfe County and the Gatton Academy for Mathematics and Science.
The competition, which is the Engineering Department’s primary high school outreach effort, provides students with a challenging engineering design experience and teachers with guidance in teaching engineering topics.

WKU engineering faculty member Kevin Schmaltz is coordinating the department’s efforts, with faculty and staff Robert Choate, Chris Moore, Shane Palmquist and Ron Rizzo providing major support. In addition, more than 100 WKU engineering students have participated in the set up and execution of the event during the fall semester.
