TWKU Professor Named 'Scholar Of The Year' By Communications Association

November 26, 2008

Bowling Green, Ky. - Dr. Carl Kell, a communication professor at Western Kentucky University, has been named “2008 Scholar of the Year” by the States Advisory Council of the National Communication Association.

The States Advisory Council is comprised of 25 member states and is a participating organization within NCA, the communication discipline’s national scholarly organization.

In announcing the honor, the Council cited Dr. Kell’s groundbreaking research on the rhetorical history of the takeover of the Southern Baptist Convention. That research has resulted in three books: “In the Name of the Father—The Rhetoric of the New Southern Baptist Convention” (Southern Illinois University Press, 1999), “Exiled—Voices of the Southern Baptist Convention Holy War” (University of Tennessee Press, 2006), and “Against the Wind: The Moderate Voice in Baptist Life” (University of Tennessee Press, 2009).

A fourth book, “Exiled II—The Lost Generation,” is forthcoming from the University of Tennessee Press.
“The award is a nice honor at this point in the scholarly study of the takeover of the Southern Baptist Convention,” Dr. Kell said.
